Who Are We?
Darin Davis
Bio in Brief
Since at least early high school, I have had a passion to know the Bible
and my ambition was to become an expert in biblical languages.
I studied modern Hebrew for two years in my high school and, during
my senior year, audited a college Greek class at a local private college.
Born and raised in Indiana, I moved to Texas after high school to study
classical Greek on a scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin.
There, I minored in Latin and took several semesters of modern Hebrew.
However, by the time I finished my Greek degree, God had changed my
life dramatically and sent me off in a completely unexpected direction.
I remained in school and got a second major in computer science while I
worked at IBM. This was followed by a master's degree in computer science
at the University of Florida.
In 1997, I moved to California to work for a computer network consulting
company. (For more on my professional background, see
www.darindavis.net.)
I was blessed to find a strong, Bible-teaching church
in my town and I began serving in the church's Biblical Counseling
Ministry.
That lovely lady in the photo above is my former Miss Colombia bride - Adela.
She's formerly a "Miss" and she grew up in Colombia. We met in 2003
and married in 2004. (For more information about Adela, see
www.EmbroideryByAdela.com.)
In 2006, we moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Austin, Texas,
where we attend the Spanish services of a Bible-teaching church.
In 2002, one of the other counselors asked me how to do a word study.
So, I wrote a paper explaining how to use resources freely available
on the web to do this. The method I described was straight-forward but
labor-intensive. I thought, "I can write a program to do this."
The first version of the program worked very well.
However, it ran only on my PC and was not easy to share with non-technical
folks. So, I looked for a way to make the program Internet-accessible.
Eventually, I learned a programming language that enabled me to put the
program (Instant Word Study) on the web.
More than merely sharing my program for automating the mechanical aspects
of word study, I wanted to share the lessons I had learned from
counseling. The vast majority of problems that drive people to seek out
counseling result from a failure to observe basic spiritual principles
of a godly living. As a consequence, much of Biblical counseling
involves teaching counselees to exercise spiritual discipline.
Thus was born the vision for creating a resource dedicating to
providing Tools for Spiritual Discipline.
